Media Regulation issues
Do you think all media should be regulated?
Yes, I think all media should be regulated to some extent in order to keep a certain level of control as who what people are viewing as well as keeping younger eyes safe from viewing potential harmful content.
Should social media companies and big tech have the right or the power to silence voices on their platforms?
As of currently, these conglomerates do in fact have the right to silence any content they view to be harmful or sensor any inappropriate content that goes against their guidelines. In my opinion, I think social media companies and big tech should only have the right to silence voices that are causing harm or destruction as well as promoting false information on their platform.
The Christchurch mosque shooting
In 2019, for 16 minutes and and 55 seconds a video was livestreamed on social media as a Gunman proceeded to his attack on Muslim worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch. Unfortunately, before Facebook ha the chance to take it down, it already had a total of around 4000 views. After this tragic event., many countries decided it was time to take action against online extremist content causing governments' responses to the attack to highlight the complexities involved with presenting the dissemination of online extremist content while also not violating on liberties such as freedom of expression. After reading this article it is clear to me that online platforms need to keep strict regulations in place in order to prevent this harmful content from spreading in the future. I think that a better system should also be put in place which decreases the risk of unmonitored content from being uploded.
